In the years after the First World War, Tom Sherborne, a young veteran still numb from years in the fight, he began working as a lighthouse. Since the only inhabitant of the island, he finds solace in the monotony and loneliness of internal conditions. When he met the daughter of the school principal, Isabelle Graysmark, local town Partageuse continent, Tom immediately fascinated by its beauty, humor and passion, and they soon married and lives on the island. As their love blossoms, he began to feel again their happiness only marred by their inability to raise a family, so when the boat with the dead and the girl mysteriously washes ashore, Isabel believes that their prayers may have finally answered. As a man of principle Tom is torn between reporting a missing child and loved the woman he loves, and contrary to common sense agrees to allow Isabel to raise the child as their own, to make a choice with catastrophic results.
